Descendants of Andreas Spitzer

Generation No. 1

1. ANDREAS1 SPITZER1 was born 1763 in Podalowka near Raczyeiwc not far from Thorn1. He married ANNA JUSTINE MANDELSKI1 Bef. 1809. She was born 1772 in Czabuninka, Nowz Girbetz, Kolo1, and died August 13, 1855 in Romansdorf, Kiev, Russia2.

Notes for ANDREAS SPITZER:

Although the Spitzers don't enter the Hoffman Family Story until Anna Florentine Spitzer's marriage to Johan Gottlieb Lehman, the Spitzers are an interesting bunch also. Anna was said to be born on October 23, 1839 in Germany or Poland.

Anna is one of a great number of Spitzer Family members largely in the area of Volhynia. She is the daughter of Michael Spitzer and Justine Will. Her older brother Christoph was born November 28, 1836 in Justinowka, Volhynia, Russia. So Anna was likely to be born there too. She had other brothers and sisters but also lots of aunts, uncles and cousins in Volhynia.

The Pastor's Notes of 1835 lists the following Spitzers in Justinowka, Volhynia: "Michael Spitzer and wife Anna Justine 22 and Caroline 3. Andreas Spitzer (Sr.) 59 and wife and son Johan 19, Gottfried 12, Gottlieb 8(?) and Anna 15. Andreas Spitzer (Jr.) 24 and wife Anna Rosine 18." This list must be from soon after their arrival.

The Christian Hoffmans also moved to Justinowka, Volhynia at the same time and also appear in the above list. This made them and the Spitzer's early pioneers and settlers in this area. Perhaps the Spitzers, too, were weavers or cloth makers. It also meant close connections between the Spitzers and Hoffmans perhaps resulting in the Michael Spitzer Family's move to Romansdorf (later home of the Hoffman's) in the 1850's. Many Spitzers, however, stayed in Volhynia from the 1830's onward.

Anna's dad Michael appears to have had brothers Gottfried, Johan, and Andreas in the immediate vicinity of Justinowka and later Faustendorf. Andreas Spitzer Senior in the list above appears to be the patriarch for all the above Spitzers. Each married and produced lots of kids in the 1850's and 1860's. By the 1870's there were grandchildren everywhere.

The Spitzers have been a big challenge to sort out. Besides all the big families above, other Spitzers were in Volhynia including Andreas Sr.'s likely brother Gottlieb and their likely father Paul. The Spitzers seemed to have originated from the vicinity of Posen, Poland.

Notes for JOHANN GOTTLIEB LEHMAN:

The Immigration of Johann Gottlieb Lehman and Family

Until the 1880's Germans in Russia could own land, practice their faith, and need not serve in the Czar's army. In the 1880's the Czar began a Russification program whereby Germans could not only land unless they spoke Russian and practiced the Russian Orthodox faith. Also they could be conscripted into the army. Additionally in this period there was racial animosity against anyone not Russian.

According to the southern Lehman family, in 1891 Johann Gottlieb Lehman had sons that were conscripted into the Russian Army. The army was a nasty place to work but it did provide Christmas vacations. When the sons returned home for Christmas in 1891, the Johann Gottlieb Lehman and Anna Florentine Spitzer, their sons, their families, the Fietz family, and even Louise Lehman Hoffman (Johann Gottlieb Lehman's aunt) gathered together in Grunwald, Kiev, Russia. They had sold almost all their belongings. Late January 3, 1892, they all boarded dog sleds and set out across the snowfields of the Ukraine into Poland. It was late at night and secret since the sons were then Russian Army deserters so could be shot if caught.

They must have transferred from dogsleds to other form of transportation and eventually made it to Bremerhaven, Germany. They left for Baltimore aboard on the Karlsruhe on January 27, 1892. Their first stop was to be a visit to the Wilhelm Otto family of Ottenheim, Kentucky; they were related to Wilhelm's wife, Caroline nee Spitzer; they migrated to the US in 1884 and probably bought the land as soon as they arrived in New York City where there was an Ottenheim sales office. They went through immigration in Baltimore on March 19, 1892 and then onward to Kentucky. Note the latter and the former dates are too far apart as it doesn't take two months by sea so perhaps the actual departure date was a bit later.

Son Jacob Lehman's daughter Pauline, born 12 June 1889 in Grunwald, perished on the last day of the voyage. Grandfather Johann Gottlieb carried her wrapped in his coat when they disembarked. Pauline was wrapped in a blanket and taken though immigration by grandmother. They took the train to Kentucky and buried Pauline in Ottenheim, Kentucky on 21 March 1892. (This story is from the Family History written by Lester Lehman and also told by Sharon Poll.)

Although they initially went to Kentucky to visit the Wilhelm Otto family located there, they soon migrated to AR where other relatives had already settled and Wisconsin. Others in their party stayed in Ottenheim; in particular, the Jesswein families stayed in Ottenheim.

Ottenheim Kentucky (also know as Lutherheim) was developed in 1883 by Jacob Ottenheimer. The idea was for Kentucky to the attract immigrants going to the west. Ottenheimer purchased 20000 acres at about $3.50 an acre; the land was marginal farming land and was sold at $7 per acre to immigrants. Ottenheimer's company was based in New York City and sold the land to arriving immigrants like our Wilhelm Otto family and the Jesswein family.

From the passenger list (from Sharon Poll):

Louise Hoffmann, age 55, was from Russia, in good health, was in possession of a ticket, had $80.00 in her possession, was a Protestant, and her destination is listed as Kentucky.

Ludwig Lehmann, age 30, married, five in his family, from Russia, in good health, was in possession of a ticket, had $700.00 in his possession, was a Protestant, and his destination is Kentucky. He was a farmer. His wife Caroline, age 31, from Russia, was in good health, in possession of a ticket, was a Protestant, and her destination was Kentucky.

Their ship, the KARLSRUHE

The "Karlsruhe" was built by Fairfield Co Ltd, Glagow in 1889 for North German Lloyd of Bremen. She was a 5,057 gross ton ship, length 415ft x beam 48ft, straight stem, one funnel, two masts, steel construction, single screw and a speed of 13 knots. There was accommodation for 44-1st, 36-2nd and 1,955-3rd class passengers. Launched on 31/8/1889, she started her first Bremen - New York - Baltimore crossing and on 28/9/1892 commenced her first voyage from Bremen to Australia via the Suez Canal. On 8/2/1902 she started her last voyage from Bremen to New York and Baltimore, on 18/12/1902 her last Bremen - Baltimore voyage (37 N.Atlantic crossings), 16/5/1906 saw her last Bremen - Australia voyage (19 voyages) and on 22/9/1906 she started her last Bremen - S.America voyage (3 voyages). She was scrapped in 1908.] North Atlantic Seaway by N.R.P.Bonsor, vol.2,p.554.] October 7, 1999

14. ANNA JUSTINE3 SPITZER (ANDREAS2, ANDREAS1) was born December 26, 1836 in Justinowka, Volhynia, Russia179,180. She married FRIEDRICH WILHELM NEUMANN November 20, 1853 in Zhitomir Parish, Volhynia, Russia181, son of ANDREAS NEUMANN and ANNA HAHN. He was born 1822 in Constantin (see important note)182,183.

More About ANNA JUSTINE SPITZER:

Christening: December 30, 1836184

Notes for FRIEDRICH WILHELM NEUMANN:

The confirmed facts are that his first wife was Dorothea Reiser daughter of Jacob Reiser (actually his brother Friedrich Reiser) was married to a Neumann in Faustindorf. This Neumann is almost certainly the Friedrich Neumann who later that year married Anna Spitzer of Faustindorf.

I believe the this Friedrich Neumann is Friedrich Wilhelm Neumann shown in the below records....

The Volhynia Church Book Conifrmations of 1837 (SGGEE Translation of St Petersburg 18949478 page 149 - the earliest Volhynia KB)

1. NEUMANN, FRIEDRICH WILHELM. Eldest son of living parents: the former citizen of Czarist Poland, ANDREAS NEUMANN, now colonist, and his wife ANNA MARIA NEE HAHN. Born in the town of Constantin, beyond Warsaw in 1822. Reads well, answered the catechism well, knows the Bible fairly well. Seems to have an inclination towards religion.

[Page 168 adds:] Baptised by the Lutheran pastor at Constantin. Does not write. The father is aged 38 and was born in the Polish colony of Tempin near the town of Klotawo [Klodawa] ; the mother is aged 37, born in the Polish village of Kelsch near the town of Baviak [Babiak] , both Lutheran.

So Friedrich Wilhelm Neumann is the Friedrich Neumann in this record .

Further evidence is that these records are from the village of Olganowka (where the Reisers first lived) had people links to the villages in which the Spitzers were living.

And there are no other Friedrich Neumanns in the records of that period.

Children of ANNA SPITZER and FRIEDRICH NEUMANN are:

i. LUDWIG4 NEUMANN, b. January 20, 1856, Romansdorf, Kiev, Russia185; d. January 24, 1925186; m. WILHELMINE WEIDEMANN, 1884187; b. March 19, 1866, Antonowka, Volhynia, Russia188; d. February 11, 1939189.

Notes for WILHELM OTTO:

The Immigration of the Wilhelm Otto Family in 1884

Caroline Spitzer and Wilhelm Otto were my maternal great-grandparents, and this is the story that has been passed down in our family. My grandfather Hermann Otto (their third child) said that his father was practicing law, and in the spring of 1884, he was defending a Jewish man who was being sued by a Russian. When he won the case, he was informed by the local officials that he must leave by nightfall. He tied a little money around his waist, packed up his family (they had five children at home then), and they all went to Torun, Poland, where they spent the summer. Their daughter Regina was already married to a Russian named Jacob Spiegel, had one son, and was living in Kiev, and she stayed behind in Russia. Wilhelm had heard of the state of Texas, and he thought that would be a good place to live.

The Otto family sailed from Hamburg on the Polaria on September 7, 1884, and arrived in New York on September 25. After being processed at the immigration station at Castle Garden, they were approached by an agent of the Lincoln Land Company of Lincoln County, Kentucky. He persuaded them to go to Kentucky to buy land, instead of Texas, and that's how they ended up in Ottenheim, Kentucky. That may be the reason the Spitzers went there in 1892.

This story is from Ruth Lyons (LYONSPCRA@aol.com)

Notes for MATHILDA KRASIN:

Walter Natho on the Krassin Family

Bill Lehman (Aunt Carrie's son) and I talked over the Krasin family history when he and his wife visited here last spring to see what we could remember.

Mother's maiden name was Mathilda Krasin. The Krasin's lived near Greenwaldt about thirty miles south of Kiev in the Ukraine in Russia. They were German farmers, I suppose. Mama was born there in 1876. This part of Russia changed hands a number of times, back and forth between Russia and Germany, and maybe-other nations. The Germans that lived there were not permitted to leave there after Russia took over. Finally after years Russia agreed to let them immigrate to North America. Thad to get a sponsor who would also furnish money for the trip here because Russia would keep everything they owned, even most of their clothing.

This was after the civil war near 1890. Laborers were needed and plantation owners wanted sharecroppers. I do not remember if mama told me who sponsored the Krasin's, or maybe I just forgot. Many were sponsored by relatives, factories, contractors, etc. The sponsors had a mortgage on their earnings until they got their money back, and before they could move to other parts of the U.S. I believe Mr. C. L. Jones must have sponsored some families, because once while I was doing some work for him he told me that he never lost a cent on any of these people, and I did not think to ask him who some of them were.

The Krasin's had nine children: Uncle Godfried (Fred), Aunt Caroline (Carrie), Uncle Gottlieb, Uncle Jacob (Jake), Uncle Gustave (Gus), Aunt Lena, Aunt Bertha Mathilda (Tillie), Uncle William (Bill). There were three older and five younger than mom.

Most of the families that moved here did not like it here so when they had their sponsors paid off they left.

The Krasin's and Uncle Julius and Aunt Carrie moved to St. Joseph, Michigan. They did not like it there either so they moved to Tigerton, Wisconsin. Uncle Fred and mother did not go with them. Mom had a job cooking at the Champion Hotel and Uncle Fred was working for Herman Quandt. Later mom married John Natho. I (Walter) was born May 30, 1898.

The Krasin's did not have enough money to come over first class, so they came on a cattle boat in the part they called the steerage because the fare was the least. I do not remember if they came on a Sailboat or Steamboat. It took either the Rooks 3 or 6 months to come over, or the Krasin's 3 or 6 months. I can't remember which. Mama said they slept very little. They had little bedding so they took turn about. They slept on the floor.

The Krasin's settled a little over a quarter mile north of where the Hudson cottongin used to stand about one mile north of AR Post. Their home was a small frame house. I do not remember what year it burned. It was still there in 1929. Aunt Lena, Hattie, and Aunt Carrie were here visiting Thanksgiving 1929, and we took them down to show them the old place.

Uncle Julius and Aunt Carrie lived near the Goff Bridge on the eastside of Pinchgut bayou. Mom and dad lived with Grandpa and Grandma Rook until Grandpa Rook died in 1917. I do not remember what year Grandma Rook died.

Dad's health was bad so they moved from the farm to Gillett in 1903. They bought the Deal General Merchandise store at the east-end of Main Street. In 1904 they built the brick store building that is now the post office and apartments. When they moved to Gillett they rented until they had the house finished that is now the Crawford Hunting Club, Wilbur Wallace caretaker. The old farm home is now the Rowlette Wolfe (Squirrelly) place. Uncle Fred stayed here for a while and then went on to Wisconsin. He came back for a visit about 1910 and stayed for about a month or two. He borrowed the horse and buggy a number of times to go to the Quandt's. Not long after he left we heard that he and Miss Quandt got married. I can't remember whether her name was Maude or Lula Quandt. They moved to Las Vegas, New Mexico. Later they moved to Amarillo, Texas where he died about 1960. The youngest, Uncle Bill died about a year or two ago in Marshfield, Wisconsin. Mama was born on 5/26/1876 and died 9/9/1951. Dad was born in Danville, Illinois on 5/8/1871 and died 4/16/1938.

Mama worked for Sam Moll, and other people in Stuttgart, also for some rich Jews in Wynne, AR.
