Descendants of Daniel Remus
Generation No. 1
1. DANIEL1 REMUS was born 17731. He married MARIE LOUISE GOLTZ (born 1782) October 16, 1808 in Zempelburg, West Prussia1.
Notes for DANIEL REMUS:
The marriage record of Daniel Remus (hereafter Daniel the younger) record states the name of the grandfather of August Wilhelm Remus; it is Daniel Remus (hereafter Daniel the elder), the same name as August's father. Given that Daniel the younger was born on 19 June 1812, Daniel the elder would have to have been born no later than 1792. Also given that Daniel the younger was the second son, Daniel the elder could have married no later than 1810. There is no appropriate candidate in the Tuchel, Konitz, or Mariendwerder parish records. Therefore it is likely that August's Grandfather Daniel the elder lived other than in Tuchel and August's father Daniel born other than in Tuchel. Candidate locations include relatively nearby Tolkemit (Tokonia from the marriage record?) and Cammin, Zempelburg (from the 1772 West Prussia Census). The only caveat here is that there are lots of Johans in Tuchel and Johans were often known by their second name. So perhaps one of the many Johans in the Tuchel area had the middle name Daniel and was August's grandfather.
Now turning to the location suggested by the 1772 West Prussia census, I found an appropriate candidate in Zempelburg. The marriage record of Daniel Remus of Zempelburg, shepherd (schafer in German), age 35, shows him getting married on 16 October 1808 to Marie Louise Goltz of Zipno, age 26 (1808 Zempelburg Marriage Records on FHL microfilm 245459). This Daniel would have had time (4 years) to produce both a first son Johan plus Daniel the younger (the second son), August's father. Daniel the elder would have been born in 1773 and Marie in 1782.
Marie Louise Goltz is very likely (although not definitely proven) to be the daughter of village head Friedrich Goltz and Christine Grotoskin of Wantzburg; she would have been have therefore been born in the Zempelburg parish and had sisters Caroline Christine (b. September 06, 1781) and Anna Louise (b. 1783). There is simply no other Goltz family shown in the 1772 census or the church records of Zempelburg or in nearby parishes.
This Daniel the elder disappears from Zempelburg records until the 1830's when some of Daniel the elder's children are confirmed. Daniel the elder's children include Johan born April 30, 1809, Peter born 17 February 1814, Christoph Friedrich born 24 April 1820, Caroline born 1 May 1823, Anna born September 02, 1825, and Louise born July 05, 1828. So perhaps he took his family elsewhere and had Johan, Daniel, Christoph, Caroline, Peter, Anna, and Louise at this second location (perhaps Tokonia where the marriage record said Daniel the younger was from).
The Great-grandfather of August Wilhelm Remus
Who was August's great grandfather (Daniel the elder's father)? Recall there were several Remus families that lived in close proximity, the Christoph, Daniel, and Peter Remus families, in the same village of Waldau, Cammin, Zempelburg, plus Johan Remus in Wantzburg, Cammin, Zempelburg. Also there was a Remus family in Topola, Grabbione, Cammin, Zempelburg. Notice how Daniel the elder named his male children after the men of the first four listed families, Johan, Daniel, Christoph, and Peter Remus. It was common to give your children Christian names of your parents, siblings and other elder family members. So could it be that one of the four men was the father of Daniel the elder and that these men were related. (It was not unusual to name your first born son after your father, too. So since Daniel the elders first born son was Johan, the Johan is Wantzburg might be a slight favorite.)
The 1772 West Prussia Census provides the following information about the four families; all lived in different houses:
· Christoph Remus lived with his wife, two sons, and three daughters. He did other types of work in addition to farming.
· Daniel Remus the eldest lived with his wife, two daughters, and two hired male farm workers. He also did other types of work in addition to farming.
· Peter Remus lived with his wife, three sons, one daughter, two hired male farm workers, and three hired female workers. He was a renter or tenant of a farm separate from the farms associated with the village (perhaps in addition to having a farm associated with the village).
· Johan Remus lived with his wife, and one son. Johan was probably not a farmer but had some other source of livelihood.
Since Daniel the elder was born in approximately 1783 he could have been one of Christoph, Peter, or Johan's sons above or a soon-to-arrive son of any of the four. (Too bad the 1772 West Prussia census doesn't give children or wife's names).
There is also a case to be made for Daniel the elder being a son of the Remus family in Topola, Grabbione, Cammin, Zempelburg. The head of this family was a schafer (shepherd) as was both Daniel the elder and Daniel the younger. It was traditional for the son to learn the trade of his father in those days. This family (but not the other four Remus families mentioned in the above paragraph) was in the Nietze District of Poland that was a source of much migration, too. This Remus family consisted of the father with wife, one son, and one hired male farm worker.
So which is the real family of Daniel the elder and who is the Great Patriarch of all of us? I am afraid that answer is shrouded in the mists of ancient Poland.

Generation No. 2
2. DANIEL2 REMUS (DANIEL1) was born June 19, 18123, and died Bef. 1867. He married CHRISTINE BERZ4 July 21, 1839 in Neutuchel, West Prussia4.
Notes for DANIEL REMUS:
There is an additional bit of complexity to be added. The christening records at Tuchel show August Wilhelm Remus to be born to Daniel Remus (second son of Daniel Remus; August was born in Tokonia) and his wife Christine nee Berz, widow of Michael Bettin of Neutuchel. The christening date for August Wilhelm Remus is 29 March 1840 (Tuchel 1840 christening record # 48) at Neutuchel. August's birth date is said to be 5 March 1840 in Remus family records. August's mother Christine named in the christening record doesn't correspond to the mother's name Eva in August's marriage record above.
The parents of August Wilhelm Remus were married on 21 July 1839 (Tuchel 1839 Marriage record # 23). Daniel was 27 years 1 month and 2 days old at the time of the marriage so he was born on 19 June 1812. The marriage record also states that Daniel worked assisting in tending the flock of sheep.
Christine Berg was 31 at the time of their marriage to Daniel Remus so she was born around 1808. She had at least two children by her first husband Michael Bettin; Carl Wilhelm Bettin was born September 13, 1835 in Neutuchel and Johan Ferdinand Bettin was born April 08, 1832. So August had older stepbrothers. There were Remus, Bettin and Berg families in the Cammin, Zempelburg area. Thus, it is likely that they knew each other prior to Michael Bettin’s death.
Alyce Lang reports the following Remus story from the Remus Family of Langenburg: "The Langenburg records say that August's father worked on an estate in East Prussia where he was responsible for the care of sheep. When August was 12, his father took him to Russia (Volhynia) and apprenticed him to a wheelwright to build wagons and wooden gears for use in providing waterpower. The father may have returned to Prussia where he probably had more children." If true, August and Daniel would have left for Volhynia around 1852; however, I have yet to find any records in Volhynia before August's marriage in 1867. In a sense the confirmation records of Tuchel support the above story. They show the confirmation of August's younger stepbrother Carl Bettin in 1850 and then no sign of confirmations, marriages or anything thereafter in Tuchel. So all of some of the August Remus family might indeed have gone to Volhynia. On the other hand, Wilhelmine Harwardt Remus' notation in her bible (circa 1921) said that August left West Prussia in about 1863, spent 3 years in Poland, and arrived in Volhynia in 1866 or 1867. Perhaps the 3 years in Poland was his apprenticeship.
Alyce Lang reports the following story from the Remus Family of Langenburg: "Langenburg records state that August Remus had two older brothers, one of whom went to New York, then no further contact. The other served in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, was disabled and pensioned. He remained in Germany and August received letters from him up until 1914." These must be August's two older stepbrothers, Johan Ferdinand and Carl Wilhelm Bettin.
In that time farmers had houses in the village and walked out to their farms. Christine's family at the time of the marriage lived in the country implying they were poor and/or small time farmers. Both the Bettin and Berz families first appear in the Tuchel records in the early 1830's so likely the groups moved to Tuchel at that time. These family names also appear earlier in the Zempelburg parish records discussed below so the families may have moved from Zempelburg to Tuchel in early 1830's.
Daniel and Christine had other children including Rosa Emilie christened on 16 October 1842 (Tuchel 1842 christening record # 164), Henriette Otillie christened on 21 November 1847 (Tuchel 1847 christening record # 181), and Auguste Pauline christened on 20 May 1850 (Tuchel 1850 christening record # 106).
Daniel Remus wife's Family Name - the hand written name appears several times in the records. The first two characters are BE and the last two could be interpreted as the polish rz or rg, German rg, or German symbol for the double ss. I have chosen Berg as it seems closest and there are many Bergs in the 1772 West Prussia Land Records and the 1781-1795 Zempleburg Kirchenbuch (and no Berz and Bess).
