My Volhynia Family Page

Both my maternal and paternal ancestors lived in Volhynia and intermarried with other families there. So in the following descriptions you will find links to the genealogical charts of all these families.

My paternal family descends from Daniel Remus who resided originally in West Prussia. The chart starts with him and goes through Volhynia (August Wilhelm Remus) and onward through Remus families resident on the plains of Canada and in Michigan. They intermarried with the Schultz family originally from Schoenlanke Poland, the Deutschlander family originally from Ozorkow Poland, the Harwardt family originally from near Moglino Poland, the Gruenke family, and Wilhelm Biederman(n) family. All these families resided in Volhynia and immigrated to Canada and Minnesota. Click and take the Remus Family Quiz.

The Remus family migrated to Canada in 1891. By the mid-1950's there was a need for a history of the family as the older generation was heaven bound. August Remus' granddaughter Rose Clausen-Mohr prepared a Remus Family History mainly centering on her mother (Maria Deutschlander, wife of Wilhelm Remus) growing up in Volhynia and subsequent migration. It is lovingly told and full of rich details. Click here to read this story. Translate Wilhelmina Hardwardt Remus' bible's front page by clicking here.

My maternal family descends from Christian Hoffman(n) who was born in Krolikowo in the Duchy of Posen, his family migrated first to Rawa in Russian Poland in the early 1800's and then to Faustindorf, Volhynia in the 1830's. He then moved to Romansdorf in 1855 and Grunwald in 1875 (both were in Kiev Parish just west of Volhynia). Ultimately his family immigrated to Wisconsin and Arkansas (with a small branch in Saskatchewan). The Hoffman(n) family intermarried extensively with the Lehman(n) family. Also they were intermarried with the Spitzer family, Kurtz family, Krassin family, Rudlaff family and Radke family. All these families resided in Volhynia and Kiev Parish; they immigrated to Arkansas, Michigan, and Minnesota. Click to solve the mystery of where Christian Hoffman was born, where Samuel Hoffman was born, or are one of these two people another of Christian's sons. Note that the Krassin family below has even more mysteries.

Other Volhynian Families

The Minge, Jesswein, Hoppe, Lenz, Lunning, and Quast families were also mixed in the above brew. There are lots more Volhynian families listed on my Romansdorf village reconstruction. So do check there too. If you have information on these families, do contact me.

I must say that I did not intend to research so many families. However, they were so intermarried that I had to in order to sort out my gang.

Best Regards Bill Remus

Hoffman

My ancestors descend from a large Christian Hoffman family that entered Volhynia in the 1830's. If you have information on these and other Hoffmans in Volhynia, please contact me as there are a lot of other Hoffmans there to sort out.

In the late 1950's my mother (Erma Hoffman Remus) showed the Remus story discussed above to Eric Hoffman, her uncle. This inspired Eric to write a Hoffman Family History. His writing is about living in tougher circumstances and triumphing over bad situations in Russia. Also it tells of their difficulties in finding good land in America. Lehman

My Hoffman ancestors intermarried frequently with members of the Johan Lehman family . Like the Spitzers the Lehman family moved from village to village at the same time as the Hoffmans. I don't have however much information on the Johan Lehman family prior to Volhynia. If you do, please do contact me.

Spitzer

My ancestors intermixed with a large Andreas Spitzer family that together with the Hoffmann family entered Volhynia in 1830's. I have however also information on Paul Spitzer family who may be related to Andreas Spitzer (in fact, Paul maybe Andreas' father). If you have information on these and other Spitzers in Volhynia, please contact me as there are a lot of other Spitzers there to sort out.

Kurtz

My ancestors intermixed with the family of Daniel Kurtz. I have however also information on Gottlieb Kurtz family that may be related to the Daniel Kurtz family. To add to the confusion, there were lots of Daniel Kurtzes in Volhynia including in both of the latter two families. If you have information on these and other Kurtzes in Volhynia, please contact me as there are a lot of other Kurtzes there to sort out.

Krassin

The Krassin family first appeared in 1836 the Alt Sapust/Alt Dubisch/Tarnowole area of Volhynia. The family patriarch is Martin Krassin originally form Schokken (modern Skoki, a noted cloth maker village near Posen); Martin's father was Johan Krassin. Here is a Family Outline or Detailed Family Tree for the Martin Krassin family. There are two Krassins who may also have been Martin's kids, click on Justina Krassin who married Johan Minge's son and Johan Krassin who married Christina Minge to see a family tree for their families. (The Krasins now mostly live in Arkansas and Wisconsin). There is also a Krassin family in MN whose patriarch was born in Kolmar, a village near to Schokken. So far I have no proof of the two Krassin families relationship. The standard American spelling is Krasin; I use this spelling in the genealogy data.
