Besswitz, Kreis Rummelsburg, Pommern

Besswitz is a very interesting village for me as the August Remus family of Millburg, Michigan and the Friedrich Steinhorst family of Sauk County, Wisconsin were workers in this village. As can be seen in the map above, this village is a manorial estate with a large estate house and garden at the center of the village.

Here are pictures of the estate house where the nobles lived in Besswitz:

Here are the barns associated with the state:

Down the road from the estate house and barns is workers houses and a pleasant brick church which is also shown on the map. It was locked up when we visited:

While this village was very pleasant, the opportunities were few so our ancestors left for America. In particular Martin Remus lived in this village and his child August Remus and his wife Wilhelmine Dalke left for Millburg, Michigan via Barnow, Rummelsburg. His daughter Johanna married Friedrich Steinhorst and directly moved to Minnesota. Martins son Johan worked in Reinfeld, Rummelsburg and his son Heinrich in Wussow (Ossowo), Rummelsburg.
