Wusters, Kreis Schlochau, West Prussia

 

Wusters in a village near the border of Kreis Schlochau and Kreis Flatow. While just a small village, it is of interest to me since the Wenski family came from this village. It is part of the Catholic Parish in nearby Landeck and/or Prutzenwalde. Here is a map of Wusters and area in 1850 (the red coloring indicates the presence in the village of a church or chapel):

David Wenski later from Schwente was from a family of Polish nobles who lived in this village; prior to 1700 they lived in Wi�ckowo (which later became Wienskowo), Kreis Schwetz. The family was originally named the Więckowski family. Oberst (Colonel) von Więckowski in the 1772 Census is likely David's cousin.

David's ancestors Jakob could have participated in the Great Northern War as a officer or in the Polish War of Succession in 1733-34. This property appears to be a grant from Augustus II or Augustus III.

David Wenski most likely changed his name from Więckowski or Wienskowski to Wenski when he converted to Evangelical Lutheranism. His mother apparently was a German Lutheran so likely he followed in her religious path.

Here is who lived in Wusters in 1772: Christian Kroske, Michel Kroske, Andreas Marun, Gottfrid Marun, Christian Maske, Martin Zarth, Michel Zulke, and Oberst (Colonel) von Więckowski. Max Baer's analysis of the mortgages in the village found the ownership held by Gustav Więckowski prior to 1753. Thereafter his son Karl Gustav von Więckowski (his wife was Elisabeth Kliest) was the owner. So Karl Gustav was likely the Oberst von Więckowski above. Click here for details on the 1772 census.

 

Paul Sternberg littleredracer@juno.com provided this additional helpful information ... "I have been examining the map of Wusters and all I see are 4 buildings. I have read about the chapel in Aus vergangenen Tagen des Kreises Schlochau. It says that it had to be broken up in around 1848 because of dilapidation and has not again arisen. (The bell however, is in the neighboring Pr�tzenwalde church tower.) I think you found what you were looking for, it just did not fit your expectations. I believe the white house is the manor house and the red brick building is a classic barn. The grayish house was possibly for one of the kids or for the hired help. Paul Sternberg

Above you are looking directly toward the manor house with servant quarters to the right and outbuildings to the left. Immediately in front are the foundations of the barns. The whole property has fallen into disrepair and is occupied by several families with very modest incomes; it is owned by the government. This estate is deep in the forest - 4 kilometers from other villages.

Peter and his family apprear in the 1772 census of west prussia. At that time they lived in Bucholtz, Kreis Schlochau:

Peter married Susanna Remus daughter of Lorenz Christoph Remus above. They moved to Zbosse and he became schultz for the village (Susanna's uncle Peter Remus was the previous schultz). There was Peter, Sussanna, two sons, one daughter, two hired male workers, one hired female worker, eight in household. Martin Klawitter is one of the sons listed above. Michael Klawitter is yet to be born.

August Blanke in his 1936 book on Kreis Schlochau says that Peter Klawitter was originally the landlord of the tavern in Buchholz. Around 1783 Peter Klawitter exchanged the Buchholz Krug for the Zbosse Frieschulzengut (the village head's house) with the Remus family of Zbosse. Johan Remus became the Kruger of Buchholtz and is so shown in 1791. So this Johan Remus is most likely the prior Zbosse Schultzengut resident Peter Remus' eldest son Johan Ludwig Remus (b. 1763) (or perhaps Peter Klawitter's wife Sussanna's older brother Johan David Remus (son of Lorenz Remus)). Why this swap occurred is not clear.

Johan Remus married Ann Koeppen. He soon died and Ann married Johan Halweg and later Andreas Janke. According to Blanke, this property in Buchholz remained in that family into the 20th century but was lost to the Remus family.

There were actually three Polish Noble families associated with this village according to website http://home.foni.net/~adelsforschung2/preuss.htm. The family names for these families between 1700 and 1800 were no only v.Wieckowski, but also v.Boriskowski and v.Kleist.
