August Remus

August Remus is a very interesting person that first appears in the church books when he marries Justine Jacobi on November 26, 1837 in Exin. Justine Jacobi was the daughter of Erdmann Jacobi a blacksmith in first noted in Blugowo, Kreis Flatow, a manorial farm.

August Remus is also a blacksmith and seems to be related to a Wilhelm Remus also present in Exin. We cannot find his circa 1815 birth record. That was the year Napoleon was defeated and Napoleon's Duchy of Warsaw (the "country" August lived in) collapsed. So the record keeping might have been not very good. However, August's death record states that he died in Schoenwald, Kreis Flatow and born in 1813 in Plotzmin, Kreis Flatow to Michael Remus and his wife Wilhelmine Brach. The death on 18 November 1880 and was registered in Suchoronczek, Kreis Flatow, West Prussia.

August Remus moved frequently from manorial farm to manorial farm; typically blacksmiths were hired on annual contract and provided with housing and space for a small garden. I have visited several locations associated with his life. The Jacobi family was associated with the manorial farm at Alt Sippory, Kreis Exin. Justine Jacobi had 3 children at manorial farms in Kreis Wirsitz prior to her youthful death.

August's second wife was Rosine Piekarska who he married on November 13, 1853 in Mrotschen. She was from a family that lived in Weisenthal (Skoraczewo) and in which there were also blacksmiths. Her children were also born at manorial farms including August Eduard Remus who was born November 01, 1854 in Weisenthal (Skoraczewo), Carl Gustave Remus who was born February 06, 1865 in Michalin, Kreis Wirsitz, and Herman Franz Remus who was born October 01, 1870 Weissthurm, Kreis Wirsitz. August died in Schoenwald, Kreis Flatow.

Most of the manorial farms in this area were split up and distributed to peasants after World War I. The estate house and barns are usually gone and several news sets of houses and barns built to accommodate the new farmers. This is the case at in Schoenwald, Kreis Flatow and most of the other villages that I have visited. Only at Michalin, Kreis Bromberg was I am to see remnants of the old estate.

Rosine Piekarska and their children immigrated to the Chicago Area. Rhoda Mackenzie hbmack@comcast.net is a very good contact for more information on this family.

About Amalie:

Amalie Remus arrived in the US July 2, 1872 with Johan Frank and his 3 kids, Gustave, Bertha and Herman.

(My guess is that children August, Ida and Louise Schlender, for whom there is no info, are from a previous marriage of August Schlender.)

Amalie was a busier lady than you give her credit for. In addn to the children you listed, there are the following:

Henry Frank, b. Jan. 12, 1873, Transit Twp., Sibley Co; d. 1949, St. Louis (I think this is MO, but not sure); he shows up on the 1895 MN census

Anna Maria Frank, b. May 8, 1876 (from MN 1895 census) d: 11-18-1965 (from King family tree); Anna married Otto George King. This is where our new cousin in TX comes in. According to his tree, Anna died in Afghanistan.

Emma Schlender, b. May 28, 1880; d. July 26, 1964

Somewhere I picked up two other names, Johan b in 1882 and Julius b. in 1884 with no further info. I presume, if they existed, they were twins to other siblings and died.

Johan Friedrich appears as a witness to birth of Wilhelmine Block nee Remus' daughter Emilie Caroline in 1868; Wilhelmine is the daughter of August. Also another child or Wilhelmine's. And Johan Friedrich is married in Constantowo in 1869 where August is concurrently located. So I assume he is her brother.

Hello Bill,

I came across your web page and information on the Remus family yesterday. I am amazed that I have not seen it sooner as I have been doing some research on the family, and more on related families, for quite awhile. You have done a phenomenal amount of research and a fascinating presentation of what you have done.

My great grandfather was August Eduard Remus. He himself is not listed in your information. However, his parents are listed under those that you haven't fit into the whole picture yet. They are August Remus (born 1815) and Rosine Piekarska. Your presentation lists all of the children of August (1815) and Rosine, with the exception of my great grandfather, August Eduard. He was the oldest, probably born in November of 1854, which I have concluded from U.S. census records and his death certificate. I am not surprised that he is not listed, because I haven't found him either, as he is not listed on the LDS Familysearch website and I haven't been able to go farther back than that. August Remus (1815) apparently died in Prussia. Rosine Piekarska Remus and all of her children, with the exception of Anna Charlotte whom I know nothing about, immigrated to the U.S. between 1880 or so and 1890's. I have found immigration and ship information on pretty much all of these children and have death certificates for most of them and have had contact with many of their descendants. All of them settled in the Chicago area with the exception of the youngest son, Herman, who went to California as a young man and married and lived out there. A big source of information has been a great granddaughter of Rosine Piekarska Remus who still lives in the Chicago area.

August Eduard Remus (1854) married Florentine Neubauer Baumgart. (This was Florentine's second marriage, the first being to John August Baumgart who is said to have been killed in a logging accident in Prussia. They had 3 children). August Eduard and Florentine had at least 4 children, including my grandmother, born in Prussia. They and the 7 children came to the U.S. in 1891.

The Neubauer family also comes from the Vandsburg/Zempelburg/Bromberg area, and I have done more research on that branch of the family than the Remus line. I have been very slowly working my way through some Vandsburg church records I have being held at the local branch of a LDS Family Library. I have seen a lot of the Remus names that you have posted on your website.

It must have been quite an experience to be able to visit these small towns now in Poland where your ancestors came from. My main research interest up until recently has been a totally different branch of the family who came from Silesia, in the Breslau/Wroclaw area. My husband and I were in Europe in the fall of 1989, shortly before the "Wall" came down. And we did take the train across Germany to Wroclaw. I had big ideas about finding the small town where my ancestors were from, but unlike you, I was totally unprepared to do anything meaningful and we never really got out of the Wroclaw train station and went on to Krakow. And unfortunately I doubt that I'll get back there again.

I would be glad to share with you any information that I might have on my Remus branch of the family if you are interested. And, of course, the best thing would be if it were somehow possible to connect August Eduard Remus and his parents to some documented branch of the family in Prussia. I guess I am not really sure where to begin on that.

I do have one question: Do you know of any source or writing or even historical novel that would give information on the everyday life in that area of West Prussia back in the last half of the 1880's--the schools, occupations, church life, etc.? You have touched on some of this, but I was wondering if there is anything more extensive around. The reason I happened on your web site is that a small group of the Remus/Baumgart family is having a little reunion in Chicago in June and I was going to write up a little history of what I know about our ancestors and wanted to include something generally about what their early life in Prussia might have been like.

Thanks for taking the time to read through this and for taking the time to make such an interesting and informative presentation on the web.
